Campus Security Report

The Hartford Conservatory strives to maintain a secure atmosphere for learning, performance and work. The school encourages students and employees to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others by following safe practices and by reporting crimes, incidents or problems to the Executive Director or Dean of Students. Each incident should be documented in an incident report, forms available in the Welch front office. If the school administration receives such a report, they will make proper investigation, including notification of local law enforcement when appropriate, if this has not already been done.

The Conservatory's campus located on Asylum Avenue in Hartford comprises two buildings. The Welch and Goodwin buildings and the parking lot separating them are owned by the school. Key access is required to the recording studio and the MIDI lab. The library's rooms and the computer lab are locked after 6 p.m., and the piano lab is locked after classes are over. Most class/practice rooms, the student lounge and the waiting areas remain unlocked. A trained security guard patrols the campus from 5 p.m. until close, keeping order, controlling traffic, and assisting students, faculty and staff in the event of an emergency.

The dance program for both the Diploma Division and the Community Division is based at 2074 Park Street, Hartford, a leased space. The setting is a busy commercial area. There are no security personnel in place during the time dancers are there.

Students and employees are expected to behave in a lawful manner, refraining from the possession, use or sale of alcohol or controlled substances while on school premises. Persons found to be in violation of this regulation will be subject to disciplinary action, including remand to the local police.

For the calendar years 2005-2007, there were three burglaries reported on campus.

The following crimes must be reported to the Executive Director or Dean of Students:

Motor vehicle theft

Burglary

Robbery

Aggravated assault

Rape/forcible and non-forcible sex offenses

Murder

Crimes of murder, forcible sex offenses and aggravated assault that show evidence of prejudice based on race, religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity

Should a sex offense occur, victims should contact the Executive Director or Dean of Students immediately, being careful to preserve evidence of the proof of a criminal offense. If requested by the victim, school personnel will assist in notifying local law enforcement officials. Individual counseling for victims is available in an off-campus setting. School sanctions up to and including expulsion may be imposed on the perpetrator of a forcible or non-forcible sex offense. In a campus disciplinary action involving an alleged sex offense, both the accused and the accuser are entitled to have others present during a hearing, and will be informed of the school's final determination of the matter.

Student activities offered by the institution

Conservatory students are represented by a Student Council, which works with the Dean of Students to plan student activities. Some events of the past few years have been midnight bowling over the Columbus Day holiday, a Halloween Party, an all-school Thanksgiving feast on the Monday before Thanksgiving, a tag sale, assembling the yearbook, and the Annual May Barbecue.

Services offered by the institution for individuals with disabilities

The Conservatory, housed in two Victorian mansions, has not been retrofitted with access to the upper floors or special facilities of any type. There is handicapped parking, and a lift to allow access to the building's first floor. Tutoring is available for students with academic difficulties.

Career and placement services offered by the institution to students during and after enrollment

Although the school offers no formal placement services, thanks to its small size and professionally active faculty, the Conservatory's instructors and deans are able to guide the students during their years here, helping them find their own niche in the performing arts field, as well as connections to make that happen.
